Catherine Ford, born in Bloomsbury (London), was raised by the mother, her grandmother and godparents. Her father left her family. As a young girl, she struggled with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and also suffered from anxiety due to the word"association. Ford began to become fascinated by acting during her teenage years and joined the National Youth Theatre. After being accepted to Sylvia Young Theatre School for only a few days however, Ford realised that this was not the best place for her. Ford made an application for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was eventually offered the position she wanted on her third try. A classmate of hers was Shaun Dingwall, who would play a part in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut in Surgical Spirit in an episode from the year 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991and appeared in shows such as The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. and London's Burning. In addition to her regular theatre work, Tate joined with the Royal Shakespeare Company in 2000-2001. However, Tate quickly began gaining notice for her stand-up comedy that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
